On this five Day journey, you will fly down to the South Gobi Desert to see the desert steppe, tremendous sand dunes, deep gorges with rivers running through them, Mongolia’s own “Grand Canyon,” and the infamous “Flaming Cliffs” of Bayanzag, and visit the dinosaur museum. The Gobi is a large desert region in Northern China and Southern Mongolia. The desert basins of the Gobi are bounded by the Altai Mountains and the grasslands and steppes of Mongolia on the North, by the Tibetan Plateau to the Southwest and by the North China Plain to the Southwest. The word the Gobi means “desert” in Mongolian. The Gobi is made up of several distinct ecological and geographic regions, based on variations in climate and topography. The Gobi is most notable in paleontology and history as part of the great Mongol Empire and as the location of several important cities along the Silk Road. Get in touch with your inner nomad as you hike, trek, horse & camel ride, and “sand sled” through the Gobi Desert.
As a Mongolian company we prefer to support Nomadic families financially, and help support their livelihoods. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture on The Steppe. It is, therefore, our preference to stay with these families if they have an extra Ger. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand.

In the morning, the driver will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to the airport. The flight takes 1.5 hours to the South Gobi desert. Meet the guide and driver at Dalanzadgad airport, and then visit the Gobi Desert museum and have a cup of coffee in the local cafe. Start the desert adventure at the aptly named “Flaming Cliffs. The adventure across the vast desert landscape will continue, this time across what was a prehistoric seabed. The flaming cliffs are a dream for fossil hunters. They were named after American adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews who found the first fossils here in 1920. The Bayanzag area is great for hiking and hunting for fossils. Stay overnight in a local family ger camp.
We will start driving at 10 am after breakfast. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the gorgeous canyon, and then continue on to Khongoryn Els. The sand dunes are the largest accumulation of sand in the Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. The spectacular dunes are bordered by lush green vegetation supported by the Khongoryn Gol river, which is fed by underground sources from surrounding mountains. Stay in a ger camp run by the local community, including a shower.
Take the opportunity to relax and truly appreciate the surrounding landscape. You will spend the day camel riding for the day, hiking, sand sliding or hanging out with a local nomadic family. There will also be an opportunity to enjoy a shower and cold drinks at the bar/restaurant as well as a night safari tour, where we will see some of the local wildlife.
After having breakfast, we will start the drive to Yoliin Am valley where you will have a hike through the gorge. Lunch will be at a local restaurant, and we then continue to Yoliin Am (“vultures mouth”), which is a deep and narrow gorge in the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in Southern Mongolia. Yoliin Am is notable for a deep ice field. This ice field reaches several meters thick by the end of winter, and is several kilometers long and can sometimes remain frozen throughout the summer. Overnight in a nomadic family ger, and ride a horse in the sunset.
For a morning flight, the driver will take you straight to the airport from the Yoliin Am valley. If the flight is in the afternoon flight, you can take some time hiking or relaxing, and then start the drive towards Dalanzadgad to have lunch, and visit the local market. Your last day of adventure in the desert ends with fond memories of your Gobi trip still clear in your mind!
We will organize a driver to collect you from the airport and take you to your accommodation! Enjoy your next travels!
