Itinerary:

Day 1 - Flight to Khuvsgul Lake

In the morning (times might change, depending on the flight), the driver will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to the airport. The flight takes 1.5 hours to Murun, Khuvsgul. Meet the guide and driver at the airport, and then visit the Khuvsgul museum and have a cup of coffee in a local cafe. Then we will drive to see Deer Stones in a Bronze Age site, created 1000-3000 years ago on the Ider River, with over 30 deer-decorated stones and carved rocks.

Arrive at Lake Khuvsgul which is known as the Dark Blue Pearl among the beautiful mountains. There are 96 rivers and streams that flow into the lake, including the Egiin River, which then joins the Selenge along its eventual path to Lake Baikal. Lake Khuvsgul is 136 km long and 36 km wide, 262 meters deep, and located at an altitude of 1645m above sea level.

Taiga fauna and flora, as well as the Tsaatan people, who practice reindeer breeding, are among the main attractions. The lake is on an important migration route for birds from Siberia, thus facilitating marvelous opportunities for bird watching. Accommodation will be at a local ger camp

Day 2 - Lake Khuvsgul

Take the opportunity to relax and truly appreciate the surrounding landscape. Breakfast time can be arranged depending on how long you want to relax in the morning. Sometime after breakfast, the guide will take you to the ship. Sukhbaatar ship was constructed in the 1930’s for the Mongolian Navy under the auspices of the Soviet Union. It received one boat, the Sukhbaatar, to patrol the lake. The Soviet-made vessel was dragged overland to the lake. The ship was named after national hero Damdin Sukhbaatar.

After boating for a couple of hours, hike through the stunning mountains for 4km. Feel free to even stay on the lake to relax. Your last day in the amazing north of Mongolia, with an overnight stay at a family run guesthouse.

Day 3 - Horse Trek

After breakfast, the horse trek will start, and continue for 5 hours, with a picnic lunch, and a visit to the Tsaatan people camp. Horse riding will be along the lake and on certain trails. Accommodation will be at a family ger camp.

Day 4 - Flight to Ulaanbaatar

Your flight today is at 12:40 in the afternoon (times might change, depending on the flight). After breakfast at 8:00, take the last adventurous ride to Murun airport. With nothing but fond memories of your Khuvsgul travel, you will take the flight to Ulaanbaatar.

We will arrange a driver to collect you from Ulaanbaatar airport at 14:10, who will take you back to your accommodation. Enjoy your onward travels!

Meg is an amazing person! and she’s very true and real to herself and others around her:) she’s very much like her horoscope sign ;Sagittarius – Straight forward, optimistic, likes to help others and also, have a wicked sense of humour!
She lent her couch to me for a night and even made me dinner!! real nice and authentic Mongolian food! Also, she arranged for a tour to khovsgol and provided us with a very experienced and cool guide/driver (whom we fondly called “the father”) and a young and energetic translator. Everything was very much taken care of and she even helped us to get the train tickets to Beijing and bus tickets to Murun, thou she didn’t have to! That’s the extra mile she is willing to go to!
Thanks for providing such awesome experience for my very first couching surfing expeierence and “sam bang”!! (Good job)
ps: did I mentioned that she has a heart made of gold too? She volunteered in the local orphanage and tried her best to help her people who are of less fortunate
