Accommodation:

Once you are in the countryside exploring Mongolia it is our preference to stay with local nomadic family Ger camps. Gers will be shared by 3-5 people (only your group) when we stay with a local family ger camps. As a Mongolian company we prefer to support these families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture and way of life on the steppe. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand. Some families expanded their ger camp and built Western style amenities. On this tour you will have some nights of shower.

Please consider that travelling in the countryside of Mongolia can be quite remote. There are often no paved roads so driving can be bumpy and can take a little longer than you might be used to. Also, given the remoteness, western style comforts may not be available.

Western style and luxury options are available in some parts of Mongolia in the form of Tourist ger camps. Ger camps have comfortable beds, hot showers and western style amenities. These are not included in the price quoted in this itinerary. However, if you think that you would prefer to have access to these western style comforts then please let us know and we can adjust the quote for your itinerary.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Flight to Khuvsgul Lake

In the morning (flight times may vary), your driver will pick you up from your accommodation and transfer you to the airport for your domestic flight to Murun, Khuvsgul. The flight duration is approximately 1.5 hours.

Upon arrival in Murun, you will be met by your local guide and driver. The day begins with a journey to the Deer Stones site along the Ider River, an important Bronze Age archaeological area dating back 1,000–3,000 years. The site features more than 30 deer‑decorated stones and carved rock formations, offering insight into Mongolia’s ancient history.

After the visit, you will drive to Murun for a meal before continuing onward to the lake. You will then arrive at Lake Khuvsgul, often referred to as the “Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia,” surrounded by forested mountains and pristine wilderness. The lake is fed by 96 rivers and streams, including the Egiin River, which later joins the Selenge River on its journey toward Lake Baikal. Lake Khuvsgul measures 136 km in length, 36 km in width, reaches a depth of 262 meters, and is located at an altitude of 1,645 meters above sea level. Overnight accommodation will be at a family‑run ger camp near Lake Khuvsgul, with access to shower facilities.

Day 2 - Lake Khuvsgul

Take time to relax and fully appreciate the beautiful surroundings of Lake Khuvsgul. Breakfast can be arranged flexibly, allowing you to enjoy a slow and peaceful morning by the lake.

During the day, enjoy a 2‑hour boat trip across the crystal‑clear waters to Wooden Island (Modon Khuis), a small island located in the middle of the lake. From the boat and the island, you will be rewarded with scenic views of the Khoridol Sairdag Mountain Range rising along the horizon.

After the boating experience, you may choose to enjoy a hike into the surrounding mountains for panoramic views over Lake Khuvsgul or simply remain by the lakeshore to relax and unwind in this tranquil natural setting.

Day 3 - Horse Trek

After breakfast, the day begins with a horse trek lasting approximately 3 hours. Riding horses, you will follow scenic trails along the lakeshore before continuing through the surrounding forest, offering a peaceful and immersive way to experience the natural beauty of the Lake Khuvsgul region.

After the horse riding experience, the remainder of the day is free to relax and unwind by the lake. You may choose to spend time by the lakeshore, enjoy the fresh mountain air, take photographs, swim (weather permitting), or simply appreciate the tranquil atmosphere and stunning views that surround you.

Day 4 - Flight to Ulaanbaatar

Your flight today is at 12:40 in the afternoon (times might change, depending on the flight). After breakfast at 8:00, take the last adventurous ride to Murun airport. With nothing but fond memories of your Khuvsgul travel, you will take the flight to Ulaanbaatar. We will arrange a driver to collect you from Ulaanbaatar airport at 14:10, who will take you back to your accommodation. Enjoy your onward travels!

Meg is an amazing person! and she’s very true and real to herself and others around her:) she’s very much like her horoscope sign ;Sagittarius – Straight forward, optimistic, likes to help others and also, have a wicked sense of humour!
She lent her couch to me for a night and even made me dinner!! real nice and authentic Mongolian food! Also, she arranged for a tour to khovsgol and provided us with a very experienced and cool guide/driver (whom we fondly called “the father”) and a young and energetic translator. Everything was very much taken care of and she even helped us to get the train tickets to Beijing and bus tickets to Murun, thou she didn’t have to! That’s the extra mile she is willing to go to!
Thanks for providing such awesome experience for my very first couching surfing expeierence and “sam bang”!! (Good job)
ps: did I mentioned that she has a heart made of gold too? She volunteered in the local orphanage and tried her best to help her people who are of less fortunate
